I’ve been doing lots of walking lately. It started as a way to reduce stress and help fight the looming depression that seemed constantly at my heels, but many months later it’s become so much more….it’s become my time to spend with God in thought, prayer, often tears, and also when I’ve been listening to all this music!
A really cool thing usually happens about a half-mile into a walk. I’ll be starting to breathe a little harder as I pick up the pace and suddenly – without any warning – my lungs will quickly do a little hiccup and draw in a very, very deep breath. I’m sure there is a perfectly medical explanation for what my body is doing, but all I know is that I look forward to it and it always feels really, really satisfying – like in that moment I finally get all the breath I could possibly hold.
That “lungs full of breath” moment is what I thought of when I first heard the lyric to this song that says, “It’s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise to you only…” As I ever so slowly but surely feel life returning to my heart, I find myself drawn again and again to desiring time alone with God. Maybe it’s because for so many months I felt disconnected from him and now it just feels so good to know that relationship is being restored as I learn to trust again. And maybe…..it’s because I am literally created to hold the breath of God – the very breath of God!
Pouring out our praise is the most natural, instinctive act of humanity when we’re connected to our creator. The very earth shouts His praise, and we get to be a part of that! Hope for the hopeless….light to the darkness….hearts restored from brokenness….all gifts from a loving God to His most beloved creation.
Now when I feel that little “hiccup” during a walk, when my lungs suddenly fill with air I imagine God breathing deeply into my spirit and filling me with all I need…..and I do need Him so….
Breathing deeply with you – <3
“Great Are You Lord”
All Sons & Daughters
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
Great are You, Lord
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only
You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
Great are You, Lord
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only
[x2]
All the earth will shout
Your praise
Our hearts will cry
These bones will sing
Great are You, Lord
[x3]
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only
